If you’re interested in having a custom home built, you may be wondering if you should find land on your own or ask the builder to help you find the perfect property.  It’s ok to go either way.  What’s most important is that you do your homework before you purchase the land.  That means asking a builder to inspect the property to make sure it is suitable for the home you have in mind.  Find out if there is access to water and sewer, if there are any land issues that could increase the cost of construction, and if the local zoning will allow you to build on the land.  For a good overview of what to know and what to avoid, read Do’s and Don’ts of Buying Vacant Land, published by U.S. News Real Estate.
