    As summer heats up, a few proactive measures can help you keep home cooling costs down.

    The National Education Association (NEA) offers 5 tips that can slash your energy bill, and create a more comfortable inside environment. According to the NEA, a ceiling fan or circulating fan can make you feel six or seven degrees cooler, due to the wind-chill effect. A programmable thermostat can decrease your summer cooling bill by 10%, and a well-maintained AC system will decrease energy consumption by 5% to 15%.  Your home will stay cooler if you avoid cooking on a stovetop, running a clothes dryer, or using the dishwasher during the day.  And, you can achieve significant savings by preventing solar heat gain. Highly reflective blinds can reduce heat gain by around 45%.
