What Makes a House a Home?

December 13th, 2017

We all dream of a house that truly feels like home. But, creating one takes more than referring to a collection of photos torn from design magazines or pins on your Pinterest page. The trick is to understand who you are, what matters to your family, and how you want to live. Architect Gil Schafer, in his new book, A Place to Call Home, notes that a home’s details – from how it’s placed on the site to the smallest details in a doorknob – work together to create a feeling of home. He suggests that every element should be considered, from siting of the home, to exterior architecture, the functionality of interior spaces, colors, materials, furnishings and special touches.
